3D PAVEMENT ART HISTORY: The inventor of 3D pavement art is Kurt Wenner. He became interested in art while studying in Italy, where he spent time drawing at the Vatican Museums. Through his studies, Wenner realized that classicism, a style of art focused on ancient Greek and Roman forms, was a visual language learned by copying earlier works of art. Despite criticism from 20th-century art critics who viewed classicism as imitative, Wenner believed that mastering this skill set could lead to great achievements.
One day, while walking to the Vatican, Wenner encountered artists creating images with chalk on the pavement. Intrigued, he tried his hand at the art form and within a year, he invented 3D pavement art.
Wenner's innovative art form quickly gained attention, and National Geographic filmed a documentary about his work, titled "Masterpieces in Chalk." The documentary showcased the challenges Wenner faced, such as rain, while creating large pastel images outdoors. "Masterpieces in Chalk" won numerous awards. Wenner introduced his 3D pavement art to the world teaching thousands of students winning the Kennedy Center Medallion for arts education.
