So far in 2024, the Sarasota International Chalk Festival has been very active, driving artistic innovation and community engagement through a wide array of programs and projects. From interactive workshops to sidewalk art exhibitions, the festival continues to impact Sarasota’s cultural landscape. Here’s a look at what the festival has been up to lately:

Avenue of Art: Expanding Sarasota’s Sidewalk Canvas

The Avenue of Art exhibit has made an incredible mark on the community by adding 100 new paintings, bringing the total to 300 works of art, as written about here. These paintings—created by 240 artists from 20 countries—grace the sidewalks and tell the story of Sarasota County’s history. What's particularly special is that the vast majority of these artists, 201 of them, are local or regional, showcasing Sarasota's deep well of talent while inviting international artists to join in the celebration.

Chalk Festival Warehouse Studio: Classes for Everyone

This summer, the Chalk Festival Warehouse Studio hosted three all-ages workshops, offering free classes in 3D Illusion Painting, Mask Making, and Infiorata. These workshops were designed to make art accessible to people of all ages and abilities, fostering a love for creativity within the community. The Infiorata workshop, which teaches the ancient Italian art of flower carpets, has been a particular highlight, blending heritage with hands-on learning.

Building Community

Grow the Heart and Parade Building!

Educational Collaborations: Ringling College and Sarasota Senior High School

The festival has been actively collaborating with local schools and universities to integrate art into educational experiences. The Ringling College of Art and Design students are currently working on an environmental botanical art project, merging sustainability and art. At Sarasota Senior High School, students are engaged in an Infiorata art class with Sarasota artist Anita Wexler, funded in part by a grant from The Exchange. These projects provide students with real-world opportunities to engage in large-scale, community-based art projects, building their skills and expanding their horizons.

Grow the Heart Workshops: Art for All Ages and Abilities

The Grow the Heart Workshops have been reaching various segments of the community, starting at Senior Friendship Center and now engaging children at Children First Pre-K. These workshops aim to build community spirit through art, culminating in a parade that will showcase the collective creativity of participants. By purchasing Grow the Heart VIP tickets, supporters not only fund these workshops but also provide free tickets to underserved individuals in the community.

Artist Live Painting Sessions at Boo’s Icehouse

From November 1-7, the festival will host live painting sessions at Boo’s Icehouse and Dog Bar, where professional artists will create large panels in real-time. These paintings will later be auctioned, offering an exciting opportunity for art lovers to take home an original piece while supporting the artists.

Building a Parade and Storefront Contest

The festival is actively recruiting local and regional artists to participate in the community, whether through commissioned work or exciting opportunities such as a storefront contest. Artists are invited to negotiate commissions with store owners or even join a cultural exchange trip to Italy to participate in the traditional Infiorata. This is not just about creating art—it's about building connections and giving artists platforms to thrive.

Hands-On Sculpture Work at the Warehouse Studio

In addition to painting, the Sarasota International Chalk Festival Warehouse Studio has been a hub for fiberglass sculpture work. This ongoing creative endeavor offers both established and emerging artists a space to explore new mediums and techniques.

Cultural Exchange with Sarasota and Ringling Museums

The festival is proud to facilitate a cultural exchange between its international artists and Sarasota Art Museum and The Ringling Museum. These exchanges not only provide artists with inspiration but also connect them with Sarasota’s rich cultural history, fostering a mutual appreciation of global artistic traditions.

Selby Gardens: Flower Maestros Cultural Exchange

Our Flower Maestros are particularly excited about their upcoming cultural exchange with Selby Gardens. Thank you also for your symbolic provision of cuttings from your collection, which will be infused into the flower carpet artists Masterpieces.
