2D CHALK
November 2nd – 6th
2D, Traditional & Contemporary Pavement Art
400 – 500 S. Pineapple Avenue, Sarasota, Florida
The 2D Pavement Artists will turn South Pineapple Avenue into a gallery in motion during the festival! Each artist will chalk for an average of 12 hours a day over three days to complete 12 foot x 12 foot paintings of playful circus images! Some of the artworks will be reproductions of classic works of art, while many others will be entirely original. You are invited to be a part of the creative process, and see the paintings evolve from blank spaces on day one, into masterpieces by day three. The road will remain closed and the completed artworks will be available for viewing for two days after completion (Nov 5-6!).
3D CHALK
October 28th – November 6th
3D, Perspective, Anamorphic & Illusion Pavement Art
500 S. Pineapple Avenue area, Sarasota, Florida
Over a dozen of the most renowned international pavement artists will bring into creation their original 3D compositions. Watch as these distorted and unusual paintings snap into incredible three-dimensional focus as you view them from the correct angle. These visual illusions are more complex than their 2D counterparts, and often take several days to complete. The development of their massive scale, and unusual perspective, is a performance well worth watching, as once it is completed many will wonder how on earth it was done! When these pieces are completed the artist steps outside the scene and is replaced by the new performer, you, the viewer, who can become a part of the scene, have your photo taken and share it with friends, leaving a lasting impression of this ephemeral art form.
World-renowned artist and innovator of 3D pavement art, Kurt Wenner, has designed an original composition using an entirely new technique which he will premiere at this year’s festival. Over a dozen local, national and international artists from Japan, Mexico, Germany and Italy have been selected to work with Wenner on the project. Artists will use a mixture of mediums and surface levels to complete this incredibly complicated and intricately designed masterpiece!.
GOING VERTICAL
November 3rd – 4th
Dolphin Street area, Sarasota, Florida
Various Locations Downtown SRQ
October 28th – November 15th
The festival took things vertical in 2011, adding another dimension to the event that explored a genre that began as a form of subversive public communication, but has more recently become a legitimate form of creative expression. This branch of the event welcomes painters, spray can and airbrush artists to Sarasota to create both permanent and temporary works of art on pre-approved private walls throughout the city. Cellograff artists from France were brought to the festival last year to introduce the art form, cellograff, to American soil and will be returning to us again in 2012. At the festival artists and beginners are also encouraged to try their skills and create works of art on over-sized wood and cellophane panels that will be available throughout the weekend of Nov 3rd-4th.
